Threaded Stories: An LGBTQIA+ History Month Panel

Saturday, October 28th 12:00-1:00PM EST

Join Austin Rivers, DAC member and Knit the Rainbow Founder, and Ana Campos, DAC member and owner of Circle of Stitches for a special panel in recognition of LGBTQIA+ History Month. Austin and Ana will be chatting with panelists Andy Forest, Jake Kenyon, Brooke Addams, and Corin Purifoy about their experiences as queer creators in the fiber industry, and influential queer historical figures.

Andy Stowers Forest - @transfloridaman
Andy Stowers Forest (any pronouns) is a fiber artist and researcher from Tallahassee, Florida, currently based in Manhattan. After moving to NYC in an emergency situation with only the contents of his car, Andy stumbled across an event giving out KtR garments and ultimately traveled to California to thank Austin on the Kelly Clarkson show. This experience encouraged Andy to develop his fiber art practice; since, his art has appeared in multiple NYC venues. Outside of knitting, Andy's research addresses the role of religious extremism in shaping support for the use of force, and in shaping support for anti-LGBTQ policies. He works as a consulting researcher, and is a member of the National Survivor Network.

Brooke Addams - @iamfullyspun
Brooke stumbled into her calling with Fully Spun. It started 7 years ago as an effort to make the 'handspun look' available and accessible, but ended up as an exploration in color and identity. Brooke has encouraged countless crafters to use the colors they love. At any given craft show, you can hear her encouraging her customers to go with their first mind. To choose the colors they love, because the items they make will spark that same feeling as the skein did originally. Brooke also developed a Pride Collection featuring colorways inspired by 16 Pride flags, which she considers her crowning achievement.

Jake Kenyon -  @isthatkenyarn
Jake is the sole artist behind Kenyarn LLC based in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Kenyarn creates small hand-poured resin notions for use in the fiber arts including stitch markers, needle minders, and buttons. Jake regularly releases patterns for knit accessories and teaches beginner crochet and knitting courses at his LYS. Outside of the fiber world Jake works as a medical Speech Language Pathologist, loves to travel, and can be found cheering on the women of the WNBA. Visit Jake’s work at Kenyarn.com.

Corin Purifoy -- @i.knit.u.knot
Corin Purifoy (she/they) is a self-taught knit and crochet designer from Milwaukee, WI with a love for soft colors and textures. She started crocheting over a decade ago and knitting soon thereafter, and they both became a love for her immediately. She is passionate about two facts: that creating is why we were created, and that fiber arts are for everybody and every body. You can find her on Instagram @i.knit.u.knot where she posts silly crafting reels and pictures of her cats.

Ramón Cobo, Founder Wooldreamers - Meet Ramón Cobo, a 33-year-old with a lifelong background in the textile industry. His dream, ignited by a profound love for natural fibers passed down by his father, is at the heart of his journey. Ramón's vision is to see natural fibers, particularly wool, take over synthetic materials. He envisions conversations with shepherds and ranchers who deeply value their sheep and the wool they produce. Simultaneously, he dreams of a world where people recognize that 100% biodegradable materials, like wool, are a powerful way to combat micro-plastic pollution and address climate change. His dream led him to explore initiatives promoting natural fibers.
