3-Hour Class

Class Details:

Learn to make socks with whatever yarn you want no matter the size feet you need to warm up! This class will detail the steps and math of creating your own custom toe-up socks, including a short-row heel, using any yarn weight that makes your feetsies happy! Modelled after how I learned to knit socks growing up in Switzerland, but changed over the years and tweaked for toe-up construction, my formula, on the worksheet we will fill in during class, offers you a customized recipe for your socks.

With a couple of simple measurements and a gauge swatch, you are in business. With all the numbers to knit socks made to your foot length and width, these toe-up socks let you fine-tune a custom fit. And after class, you can apply the same principles to making socks for anyone with any yarn you like. From tiny baby socks to thick socks for Grandpa on the sofa and everything in between!

Since I haven’t yet met the person who can knit a sock in 2 hours, this is mostly a hands-off class, where I will run through the process and the math of creating your custom socks with you. But have some yarn and needles at the ready, just in case we have a little extra time. Making socks to fit your feet is not rocket science, folks, so never fear, but you will need to do simple math, so have a calculator handy (cell phone works just fine!)

Technique Requirements: knit/purl, cast on/bind off, working in the round, have knit a few accessories, knowledge of sock construction

• Gauge for your sock: Decide what yarn you would use for your custom socks and swatch to find out what needle size gives you a fabric that is ‘sockworthy’ i.e. mostly socks are knit tighter than you would knit a sweater with the same yarn, so start with a smaller than normal needle size. For example, maybe try a US 6 for worsted weight yarn. Your swatch needs to be about 5” across to get and accurate measurement! Write down what gauge (stitches over 4”) that fabric is.
• Have a calculator and the worksheet (class handout) ready.
• Measure your foot circumference at the ball of the foot (a) and instep (b) (see schematic in pictures)

Supplies for Class:

Calculator, pen, class handout, have yarn and needles (whatever type you prefer for sock knitting) handy, yarn and needles is extracurricular, but great if we have a little extra time at the end.
