Class Details:
Full-fashioned shoulder shaping is a technique used in ready-to-wear sweaters to place the shoulder seam of a set-in-sleeve sweater behind the natural shoulder line on the body. This creates a comfortable, flattering fit as well as the opportunity to use decorative shaping elements along the back shoulder line. In this class we’ll discuss the architecture of full-fashioned shoulder shaping, practice working fully fashioned decreases, and learn how to convert a regular set-in sleeve pattern to use this shaping.
Technique Requirements: Knit/purl; cast on/bind off; increase/decrease; basic finishing techniques; have knit a whole garment
Homework:
Please knit 2 stockinette swatches using worsted weight yarn and size 7 needles (or needles to get a fabric you like) as follows:
Swatch 1 (Back): Cast on 31 sts and work in stockinette stitch for 2”. Leave stitches on needle and yarn attached; we will continue working this in class.
Swatch 2 (Front): You are working a swatch that mimics the neck shaping of a Right Front sweater piece. Cast on 31 sts and work in stockinette stitch for 2”. Next RS row: Bind off 4 sts, k to end of row. Work a WS row. Continuing in stockinette stitch bind off 3 sts on next RS row, then 2 sts on following 3 RS rows, then 1 st on following 3 RS rows. You will have 15 stitches on your needle. Continue working 15 stitches in stockinette until piece measures approximately 5¾” from cast-on edge. Bind off all stitches and cut yarn.
Supplies for Class:
Materials you should use for the swatches: smooth worsted-weight yarn in a light to medium color with corresponding needle size (Suggested size: US 7). Please do not use textured, novelty, or difficult-to-use yarn. You will also need a calculator, paper, pencil, a yarn needle, scissors, a length of contrasting color yarn, and enough extra yarn to complete our shoulder pieces and seam them.
