In a culture obsessed with self-improvement and productivity, even our hobbies can get pulled into the pressure of optimization. We’re told it’s okay to have a hobby as long as it’s useful, impressive, productive, or somehow “worth” the time.

But hobbies are supposed to be a refuge from the responsibilities and expectations that fill every other part of our lives. That can be easier to remember when we’re surrounded by other knitters at a retreat, but what happens when we return home? Toxic productivity has a way of pushing pleasure, rest, and curiosity to the sidelines until the very thing we once loved starts feeling like another task on the to-do list.

In this session, we’ll explore the ways the “Martyr” shapes how we think about hobbies, creativity, rest, and play. We’ll look at where those internalized pressures come from, why we may feel defensive or guilty about rest, and how to create new pathways back to creative joy that exist outside the Martyr’s reach.

There will also be time to reflect on your own Martyr, whether she sounds like a ghost, a grandmother, or Martha Stewart herself. You’ll leave with practical ways to quiet that voice and reclaim creative play on your own terms.

We’ll just leave her upstairs muttering to herself while we enjoy the studio.

Saturday, February 21st 10:00-11:00AM EST

Beginner-friendly, demonstration-based session aimed at knitters who already own a machine but haven’t used it in a long time; or ever. We will walk through how to safely unbox or unpack a stored machine, evaluate its condition, identify missing or damaged parts and give it a simple cleaning to prepare it for use again. The goal is to remove that initial fear or intimidation and give you the confidence to take the first step toward using your machines.

Here is what we will learn:

How to identify your machine model and locate basic manuals or resources
A checklist for assessing whether it’s ready to knit or needs professional servicing
Simple cleaning and lubrication steps for most models
Tips for safe setup and storage going forward
