In a culture that is obsessed with self-improvement and productivity, our hobbies can be swept up into the work of optimization. You can have a hobby, as long as it sounds good on a resume, isn’t self indulgent, and doesn't waste time.
Except a hobby is supposed to be our refuge from the duties and responsibilities that make up every other aspect of our lives. It can be easier to remember that when surrounded by other knitters, but what happens after the retreat? Toxic productivity pushes pleasure, relaxation and curiosity to the back burner. Sometimes it sucks so much life out of our hobby that it just feels like another task on the to-do list.
In this session, we will explore the ways the Martyr changes how we view hobbies. We’ll consider the ways we might be feeling judged and defensive about our rest and play. And we'll explore how to construct new pathways in our creative play, ones that are out of the Martyr's reach.
This talk will include time to reflect on your own martyr – be she the voice of a ghost, grandma, or Martha Stewart herself. And you’ll leave with techniques to turn down the volume on her microphone. We’ll just leave her muttering to herself in the attic while we play in the studio.
