An afterthought thumb is an alternative to making a gusset on mittens. It’s great because you can keep on knitting in the stitch or colorwork pattern without having to worry about the thumb stitches. The thumbs will be knitted later and is marked with knitting the spot with waste yarn. My Hanikamu Mitts is a quick and fun project that uses a afterthought thumb.
