This introductory class is an ideal next step for knitters who are confident with basic techniques and knit and purl stitches, but want a friendly and enjoyable introduction to lace patterns. Focusing on stocking stitch (stockinette) based patterns, you will learn about directional decreasing, eyelets/yarnovers, and how they combine to create beautiful stitch patterns admired by many knitters and non-knitters alike. Instructions are provided in charted and written form, so you can choose whichever mode suits you if you are unfamiliar with one or both styles of pattern writing. As a result of this class, you’ll feel more confident about knitting lace and well on your way to levelling up your knitting!

Cast on and prepare 3 swatches. You can use any yarn you like, but avoid yarn that has a lot of elasticity.

• Swatch 1:
Cast on 21 stitches.
Beginning with a knit row, work in stocking stitch for 2 rows–the first row is the right side.

• Swatch 2:
Cast on 21 stitches.
Row 1 (RS): Knit.
Row 2: K1, purl to last stitch, k1.

• Swatch 3:
Cast on 26 stitches.
Row 1 (RS): K1, p2 (k9, p2) twice, k1.
Row 2: K3, (p9, k2) twice, k1.

One ball of worsted-weight yarn in an easy-to-see color; nothing too dark, bright or that hinders visibility. Avoid yarns with lots of spring and/or a high wool content—no more than 50%. The elasticity will make the lace pattern harder to see. If you are looking to use up partial balls of yarn, superwash wools with little elasticity are best if you don’t have anything that’s a wool blend, cotton blend, etc.
