Class Details:

Cables are a beautiful technique, one of the hallmarks of traditional knitting, and a natural next step for knitters who are confident with basic stitches of knit and purl. In this class you will be introduced to the cable technique, learn how to create twisted and crossed stitches, and enjoy adding texture and interest to your knitting. Instructions are provided in charted and written form, so you can choose whichever mode suits you if you are unfamiliar with one or both styles of pattern writing. By the end of the class, the intricacy of Aran sweaters will be less mystifying and you’ll feel more confident about cables!

Homework:

Cast on and prepare two swatches. You can use any yarn you like, but you may find it easier to use yarn that has some elasticity.

• Swatch 1:
Cast on 19 stitches.
Row 1 (RS): P3, (k6, p1) twice, p2.
Row 2: K3, (p6, k1) twice, p2.

• Swatch 2:
Cast on 21 stitches.
Row 1 (RS): P3, (k6, p3) twice.
Row 2: K3, (p6, k3) twice.

Supplies for Class:

A cable needle: the Clover ones are usually easier to work with because they’re lightweight (U shaped: https://www.sewessential.co.uk/clover-u-shaped-cable-stitch-holders or cranked: https://www.sewessential.co.uk/clover-cable-stitch-holders ). These are the ones I use, but of course other brands are available.

One ball of worsted- or Aran-weight yarn in an easy-to-see color; nothing too dark, bright, or that hinders visibility. Any yarn content is suitable, but anything with a soft handle, good stitch definition, and no more than 50% cellulosic (plant) fiber will be easier to handle. Yarns with little elasticity may be slightly tricky for newcomers to cabling.
