Learn Fair Isle knitting from textile historian and knitwear designer Dr. Jennifer Daley, whose home was in Fair Isle, Shetland Islands, Scotland. Jennifer is the author of several Fair Isle knitting books, including the Journey to Fair Isle: Knitting, Textile History, and Pilgrimage, published in 2026.

Whether you’re new to stranded colorwork or looking to sharpen your skills, this workshop is all about learning, creating, and connecting through the rich tradition of Fair Isle knitting. We’ll explore color selection, managing floats, reading charts, and techniques for smooth, even tension—all while working on a beautiful Fair Isle project you’ll be proud to wear.

The workshop includes:
• Fair Isle knitting tips, tricks, and techniques
• A guided exploration of traditional Fair Isle patterns and motifs
• An explanation of ideal yarn properties for Fair Isle knitting
• A discussion of Fair Isle knitwear design, including color theory and color dominance
• A Fair Isle knitted hat-blocking explanation
• A steeking discussion on how and why to safely cut your knitting
• A presentation of Fair Isle textile history and Shetland knitting tools

Technique Requirements: knit/purl

Cast on and begin your selected Knitting Jenny Fair Isle pattern (see Supplies to Bring) until just before the Fair Isle patterning begins. That way, during our class we can focus on the actual Fair Isle knitting and patterning and techniques, rather than the casting on and setup. Before the class begins, students must purchase a Knitting Jenny Fair Isle pattern at www.knittingjenny.com. During the workshop, students will be knitting the Knitting Jenny pattern that they individually selected. So, bring your Knitting Jenny pattern and yarn and needles to the workshop, and we will knit together!
