Class Details:

Are you new to spinning? Know how to make yarn, but not sure about the difference between woolen and worsted, or even what it means? Are you a more experience spinner, but struggle to keep your yarns consistent, or change the size of the yarn you make?

In this class we’ll explore the mysterious, and sometimes daunting, world of drafting. You will learn woolen and worsted drafting techniques, how they are different, how they can be similar and what the key factor is for each one. Hint: It’s not the direction you draft. As you practice your drafting, we’ll talk about how woolen and worsted drafts change a yarn’s characteristics and what that means to your knitting and other fiber crafts.

You will discover what part drafting plays in keeping a yarn consistent and how drafting is essential to changing the size of a yarn from lace to bulky and back again. By the end of this class you will see that the key to spinning the yarn you want may be in your drafting.

Technique Requirements: Basic spinning knowledge

None

Supplies for Class:

Basic spinning equipment, a wheel, 3 bobbins, and a lazy kate. 2-4 ounces of a medium fiber (like Corriedale, Shetland, Falkland), in a solid, semi-solid, or natural color. You do not have to buy new fiber for this class, use a fiber you like to spin from your stash.
