As hand knitters, when we make clothing, we make the fabric as well as shape and size the garments simultaneously. This way of working enables us to become fully immersed in every aspect of the creative process. Because of the steps inherent in the handknit garment construction process, most knitters add or change techniques on each project to place a personal stamp on their handmade artwork. Since this is a general way of working, without realizing it, most knitters not only have the necessary skills to alter existing commercially published patterns, but also possess the skills to successfully create amazing designs from scratch. The key to this success lies in fully understanding and organizing the design components.
In this lecture, attendees will be walked through the important elements that comprise each of the 4 main steps necessary to successfully bring a visually and structurally balanced design idea to life. The techniques reviewed will include recognizing and isolating the seeds of an idea. Then, harnessing those creative elements by selecting a stitch pattern, yarn, silhouette, fabric, and planning the garment shaping elements.
