Class Details:

When brioche goes well you feel like a hero, but when things go wrong there’s no need to panic (or rip). We’ll start by fixing the most common mistake: the missing YO, the random float going across your fabric. By carefully examining the structure of our fabric, we will master turning a brk into a brp, and even learn how to insert a needle into our fabric for a controlled rip. Finally we’ll kick it up a notch to recovering a dropped stitch and even a demo of tinking (unknitting) increases and decreases.

Watch this video to learn what to expect from a Patty Lyons class.

Skill Prerequisite: Should be comfortable working two color brioche rib flat, without supervision.

Homework:

On circular needle, CO 17 stitches in light color.
Set up row DS LC (WS): P1, (sl1yo, p) × 7, sl1yo, p1. Slide your stitches to the other side of the needle.
Set up row DS DC (WS): Sl1 wyif, (brk, sl1yo) × 7, brk, sl1 wyif. Turn your work.
Row 1 LS LC (RS): K1, (sl1yo, brk) × 7, sl1yo, k1. Slide your stitches to the other side of the needle.
Row 1 LS DC (RS): Sl1, (brp, sl1yo) × 7, brp, sl1. Turn your work.
Row 2 DS LC (WS): P1, (sl1yo, brp) × 7, sl1yo, p1. Slide your stitches to the other side of the needle.
Row 2 DS DC (WS): Sl1 wyif, (brk, sl1yo) × 7, brk, sl1 wyif. Turn your work.
Repeat rows 1 & 2 one more time.

Abbreviations
DS: dark side of work—the “knit” columns on this side of the work are in the dark color.
LS: light side of work—the “knit” columns on this side of the work are in the light color.
DC: dark color—use the dark-colored yarn. NOTE: This is your main color.
LC: light color—use the light-colored yarn. NOTE: This is your contrasting color.
Brk: (brioche knit—also known as a “bark”) knit the stitch (that was slipped in the previous row) together with its yarnover.
Brp: (brioche purl—also known as a “burp”) purl the stitch (that was slipped in the previous row) together with its yarnover.
sl1yo: (slip one with yarn over needle). When following a brp, the yarn is already in front. Slip next stitch, then move the yarn over the top of the needle, then between the needles to the front into position for the next stitch. When following a brk, move yarn to front, slip next stitch, move yarn over the top of the needle into position for the next stitch.

TIPS:
• Your edge stitch will be a LC knit. It is always knit or purled when working a LC, always slipped with yarn to WS when working a DC.
• You’ll notice that when the color and side match (LS, LC or DS, DC) you are knitting with that color.
• When the two colors are on DIFFERENT sides, you will be working with the DC (background)
• When the two colors are on the SAME side, you will be working with the LC (main)
• The YO will always be a different color than the slipped stitch. You always know you are working into that doubled stitch with the SAME color as the stitch, not the YO.

Supplies to Bring:

Yarn: Any smooth worsted-weight or Aran yarn, one in a light color, second ball in a contrasting color. NO VARIEGATED YARN.

Needle & Notions: Circular knitting needles in the size recommended for your yarn or a few sizes smaller than the yarn recommends (for your homework), locking stitch marker, additional small circular needle, crochet hook appropriate to yarn (or slightly smaller), U or fishing hook cable needle.
