Expanding on Kyle’s Locked Floats workshop, this class explores the process of creating patterned knitted fabric using 3 colors of yarn in the same row/round while simultaneously trapping all floating yarns. Together we will discover how to manage our yarns while knitting both flat and, in the round, and then explore opportunities to customize existing charted patterns by adding a third color. This technique offers the opportunity to create fabulously finished pieces like shawls, wraps, and cardigans that have a beautiful “wrong side” that appears almost woven.
Technique Requirements: Students should already have taken Kyle’s Stranded Knitting: Unlocking the Secret to Locked Floats and be comfortable with the technique. This workshop encourages holding yarns in both hands (also known as two-handed knitting).
Swatch #1: On 16” circular needle using light colored, worsted weight yarn, CO 100 sts. Join in the round, being careful not to twist. PM to indicate beg of round. Knit 6 rounds. Do not cut yarn. Leave project on needles.
Swatch #2: On second circular needle using a second light colored, worsted weight yarn, CO 40 sts. Row 1: P to EOR, Row 2: K to EOR, Row 3: K to EOR. Do not cut yarn. Leave project on needles.
Be sure all yarns are wound and ready to use.
Two swatches completed using separate sources of light-colored yarn (keep yarn attached to projects), 2-3 additional colors of worsted-weight yarn (solid-color wool yarns, with medium to high contrast, work best), tapestry needle, scissors, stitch markers, note-taking materials, sticky notes or magnetic board to keep your place on the chart, knitting bag filled with its usual treasures.
