Knitted braids are the perfect embellishment for any project! The Baltic countries of Latvia and Estonia have many different styles of braids that have added interesting details to mittens, gloves, socks, and sweaters. Learn the about three styles of braids, the basic foundation, and experiment with color combinations and directionality.
Technique Requirements: knit/purl, cast on/bind off, working in the round, chart reading, easy colorwork, basic finishing techniques
Using 4mm/US 6 needles with main color, cast on 40 sts. Join in the round and place a marker for beginning of round.
Rnds 1–2: Work 1x1 rib as follows: [k1, p1] repeat [-] to end.
Rnds 3–4: K to end.
Rnd 5: [K1 with main color, k1 with contrast color], repeat from [ to ] to end.
US6 / 4mm needles for knitting a small circumference; either double pointed needles or 80 cm/ 32” circular needle for magic loop method. 2 colors of DK-weight yarn in contrasting colors, approx. 20g of each color.
