Teacher Bio

Kate Oates is a knitwear designer, instructor, and retreat hostess with over 15 years of experience as a full-time fiber artist. She has published nearly 350 knitting patterns and several books, with designs known for their modern style, inclusive sizing, customizable options, and meticulous attention to fit and detail. Kate teaches knitters how to create garments that not only look beautiful—but are flattering and comfortable to wear.

A passionate and highly organized teacher, Kate leads workshops across the country at major festivals, retreats, and local yarn shops. In recent years, her teaching schedule has included the New York Sheep & Wool Festival, Hill Country Weavers Retreat, and a variety of shops nationwide. Her classes are supported by thoughtfully designed workbooks that keep students from scrambling to jot down every note and instead be fully engaged in the workshop.

Kate earned a PhD from the University of Florida and brings analytical insight into every class she teaches. She is also a proud neurodivergent and chronic pain warrior who advocates for accessibility and chooses joy in the making community, even while navigating personal challenges. She lives in South Carolina with her husband, their four sons, and two pups, Hazel and Oscar.
