Ready to take your brioche knitting to the next level? The possibilities open wide for stunning sideways-knit brioche cowls, hats, sweaters, and more once you know how to cast on provisionally in brioche and graft the project together once it’s done.

This two-part class will teach you everything you need to know to work a seamlessly elegant graft in brioche. In the first session, you’ll learn the secrets to provisionally casting on in two-color brioche; in the second, we’ll work through the two-pass process of grafting our brioche swatches together for a perfect finish that disappears utterly.

Technique Requirements: knit/purl, cast on/bind off, students must already know how to knit two-color brioche flat (back and forth).

In advance of class, knit a two-color brioche flat swatch, as follows:
With Darker Color (DC) using any method, cast on 21 sts. Work one row plain. Join Light Color (LC) and work for at least 3" as follows:
Row 1A (LS) With LC, k1, *sl1yo, k [first time only, brk all other repeats of this row]; rep from * to last 2 sts, sl1yo, k1. Do not turn; slide sts to other end of needle.
Row 1B (LS) With DC, sl 1, bring DC between needles to front, *brp, sl1yo; rep from * to last 2 sts, brp, sl 1. Turn.
Row 2A (DS) With LC, p1, *sl1yo, brp; rep from * to last 2 sts, sl1yo, p1. Do not turn; slide sts to other end of needle.
Row 2B (DS) With DC, sl 1, *brk, sl1yo; rep from * to last 2 sts, brk, sl 1. Turn.
Keep all stitches live and do not bind off. Place swatch onto stitch holder, spare cable, or waste yarn. Leave tails at least 40" long.

About 50 yards of smooth worsted weight yarn in each of two contrasting colors, dpns or short circular needles in a compatible size (usually US #6–8) for working brioche flat; crochet hook in a similar size; scissors; a stitch holder, scrap yarn, or spare cable to hold live stitches; stitch markers; a tapestry needle.
