Class Details:

If the prospect of mixing colors gives you the fidgets, but you’ve dreamt of putting together your own complex color schemes for projects, this class is for you. We’ll begin by learning a simple but strikingly effective method for knitting plaid fabric—a method that can even be used to re-create family or school tartans. Then we’ll use the framework of the plaid as the point of departure for a practical, hands-on lesson in color selection. You can learn to design your own color schemes—all it takes is a little knowledge, a little practice, and a little playfulness.

Technique Requirements: Knit/purl; cast on/bind off; chart reading

Homework:

None

Supplies for Class:

Fairmount Fibers will be providing 3 Bocados, which are 25g mini skeins of worsted-weight Alegria Grande (a blend of superwash merino and polyamide) in a random mix of colors for each attendee. This will be given out in class. Additionally, please bring three to five balls (partial is fine) of any solid or semi-solid worsted or DK weight yarn of your own. One 16" or 24" circular needle, or one pair straight needles, in a size that will give you a firm gauge with typical worsted- or sport-weight yarn. Tapestry needle. Notebook and pen or pencil for making notes. It is also expected that students will have with them the usual notions basic to knitting: scissors, a selection of stitch markers, etc. Please also bring three to five balls (partial is fine) of any solid or semi-solid worsted or DK weight yarn of your own.
