Class Details:
Exercise your knitting muscles with this sweater intensive workshop. Find out once and for all why your sweaters don’t fit the way you want them to and how to whip them into shape. You’ll never look at a pattern the same way again! (Don’t worry, you won’t even break a sweat.) This class is an excellent follow-up to The Sweater Whisperer and will take you deeper into understanding the elements of fit. "Get Fit" emphasizes techniques for seamless sweaters, but most of the elements of fit and sizing relate to any sweater pattern. You’ll learn: • Everything you ever needed to know about gauge (but were afraid to ask) • The important role of both stitch and row gauge for sweater knitting • The elements of ease and how they relate to fit • How to "read" a seamless pattern for size checkpoints • How and where to work modifications in seamless sweaters • How to choose the right yarn for the results you want • How (and why) the "fabric" affects the fit Class lecture includes a Q & A answering your burning sweater questions and a discussion of what constitutes proper fit for a sweater, based on how you’ll wear it. Technique Requirements: Knit/purl; cast on/bind off; increase/decrease; working in the round; have knit a whole garment; experience with top-down garment construction
Homework:
With light worsted or DK weight yarn and US size 6/4mm needle, cast on 25 stitches and work 6 rows in garter stitch. Then work as follows: RS: Knit WS: K3, P to last 3 st, K3. Rep these two rows until piece measures 4 in/10 cm – do not bind off. Leave on needle or stitch holder. (You may leave the working yarn attached or cut it, to be rejoined in class.)
Supplies for Class:
1) Knitting needles in US sizes 6/4mm and US Size 7/4.5mm (any length, circular or straight) 2) Calculator, pencil/pen 3) General knitting notions (including a locking stitch marker) 4) Measuring tape or stitch gauge ruler 5) Homework (as listed) 6) At least 25 yards of the same light worsted or DK weight yarn used for homework (to be used in class). Choose a light worsted/dk yarn in a medium to light colorway – do not bring novelty yarn, mohair or other yarns that obscure stitch definition. Here’s a tip about choosing which yarn to bring for a workshop: Never bring yarn to class that you wouldn’t want for a real knitting project. (Similar to the advice: Never cook with wine you wouldn’t want to drink.) Crummy yarn leads to a frustrating learning experience; bring yarn you will enjoy.
