Class Details:
In this all-day class you will get to know and love the wonders of indigo dyeing. We will begin with a brief history and the many ways one can approach indigo dyeing. After introducing the method we will focus on and discuss how to troubleshoot certain problems. We will work in teams to prepare and set up your own vat. In the second half of the class we will get to the dyeing! You will get to experience the magical transformation that happens when goods are pulled form the dye bath. We will work with mini skeins of yarn to explore gradient dyeing and how to build color. On prepared fabric we will play with different methods of resist dyeing using blocks, clamps, and thread. There will also be an opportunity to dye your own (small) piece of clothing/bag/skein of yarn. During this time we will also discuss how to recalibrate your vat and how to store it for future use. You will walk away with a recipe and all the knowledge you need to dye at home.
