Class Details:

In this class Amy will guide you through the planning process to design toe-up socks that are uniquely you, from start to finish: your gauge, your size, your patterning, your choice of heel, toe, and cuff. Working through the supplied worksheet, you’ll plug in your gauge and measurements, learn how to incorporate a stitch pattern of your choosing, learn where and how to place various heel choices, leg increases, ribbing, and cuffs. We’ll work through the sock math together, learn about sock ratios and discover the handy rule of the hand.

In the end, you’ll have the road map for a new sock pattern—one that is uniquely your own. Whether you’re planning to share your design with others or just make socks that are exactly what you want, you’ll learn important skills that bring the project within reach.

Please note that we will not be knitting during this class, but rather we will spend our time planning out and customizing our patterns.

Technique Requirements: knit/purl, cast on/bind off, increase/decrease, working in the round, have knit a few accessories

Homework:

In the yarn you intend to use for your socks, knit and measure a gauge swatch in the round in stockinette stitch. Measure both stitch and row gauge. (It is acceptable to use a previously-knit pair of socks to measure your gauge, as long as you will be using the same yarn and needles on both projects.) In advance of class, take the following measurements of your foot (or the foot of the person for whom you will be making these socks):
• Circumference around the ball of the foot
• Circumference around the lower calf, about 2 inches above the ankle.
• Length of foot
• Length of hand, from wrist crease to tallest finger

Supplies for Class:

Printout of the handout (available in the Event Hub the week of the event), pencil or pen, tape measure.
