Class Details:

Vermont farmer/dyer Tammy White teaches about growing a dye garden and how to harvest the richest colors, when to sow, when to pick, how to store the color for the future. She’ll also demonstrate detailed directions for dyeing protein and cellulose fibers (wool, silk, linen, cotton, etc.) from start to finish. From kettle-dyed yarns to contact-printing from petals and leaves, this is a class that introduces, delights, and explores the richness of natural dyeing. Take notes and make your lists based on the presentation so that you’ll be able to create your own palettes—be they for watercolors, fabric painting, or dyeing your own garments or yarns. You’ll have a good foundation for following your heart with plant-based dyeing whether it is knowing where to find the most sustainable and ethical sources, growing your own, and learning of the many helpful resources for dyeing be it in the kitchen, the backyard, or a studio. Any type of fiber artist might enjoy learning these skills, but knowledge of fiber arts is not a prerequisite.
