Class Details:

One of Kate’s original and most popular workshops, Math for Hats introduces knitting math on a manageable scale—focusing on hat construction while teaching core concepts that can be applied to all types of garment design. This course is ideal for knitters of all levels who want to adjust and add sizes to existing patterns or design a custom hat from scratch.

The class begins with swatching in the round and explores gauge, levels of ease (including when to use negative or positive ease), standard sizing references, and how to estimate yardage. We’ll cover a variety of hat shapes such as beanies, berets, and more—plus details like earflaps, embellishments, and other design features. Construction methods are discussed in depth to help you determine what suits your vision and desired fit.

Students will work through the full Math for Hats workbook, complete with exercises and worksheets. The class also includes the Adventure Hat pattern—a versatile design you can customize in any style.

Technique Requirements: knit/purl, cast on/bind off, working in the round

Homework:
Students will be supplied with a document that details their swatching options and allows them to swatch for the project of their choice. The only homework is to work 6 rows of garter stitch in order to set up for a working swatch we will utilize in class.
Supplies to Bring:

• Math for Hats Booklet and spare worksheets (purchase here)
• Yarn and appropriately sized circular needles at worsted gauge or heavier. This yarn should either be scrap yarn or yarn for a hat project you are ready to begin. You may not be able to reuse this yarn after swatching so plan accordingly to make sure you have enough yardage for your project.
• Basic calculator (or your smart phone), pencil, scrap paper
• Knitters tools: scissors, darning needle, measuring tape
• An open mind about some easy math and a little bit of patience with yourself
