Welcome to the knit world of Ellie d'Eustachio, a textile street artist living in Brooklyn, New York. Her unique art is crafted using simple garter stitch to create curving creatures and nature-inspired motifs. Learn basic shaping and how to apply your current knitting skills to make flat knitting in unusual shapes. Hear about Ellie's journey toward street art, advocacy for public art, and even a set for a New York Times–reviewed theater piece. During this class we will talk design, finding locations, knitting with joy and freedom. We will also discuss methods of knitting collaboratively to create large knit projects for public display. Learn how knitters can yarnbomb, too! Each participant will knit a small yarnbomb, such as a bird or flower.
Technique Requirements: My goal is to show that anyone with basic skills can use them to make public art. The knit stitch is needed but nothing much else.
None
Worsted- or chunky-weight yarn in 2 or 3 colors and a set of straight needles to knit it comfortably (I suggest size 7 or 8).
