Do you love math and live and breathe numbers? This class is not for you! Do you have multiple degrees in mathematics, logic, and related subjects? Run fast and far away!
If you hate math as much as I do, and break out in a cold sweat at the mention of formulas, right angle triangles, and (gasp) Pythagoras, then this class is for you!.
I like sweaters that fit. For this reason, I've learned to better understand math as it applies to sweater fit, so that I not only have better fitting sweaters, but I understand why they fit better.
Using visual tools, we'll break down sweater math into small, easy to digest chunks to make sweater math more palatable and easier to understand. We'll look at formulas that make sweater fit easier to understand, and explore why they work. And finally we'll tackle the monster that is Pythagorean Theorem and find ways to visualize why it helps us not only with how our sweaters fit our bodies, but how sweater pieces fit together perfectly.
Skills required: Absolutely no knowledge of mathematics other than basic addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication.
• pencil or pen and notebook for taking notes
• graph paper
• handout
• optional: measuring tape
• scientific calculator--most smartphones and tablets have one as an alternate screen in the calculator app. On iphones, it appears when you turn your phone sideways (landscape mode), and on ipads there is a button in the bottom left corner that allows you to choose which mode your calculator is in. Choose "scientific."
