Not all yarn is created equal, and understanding its properties can transform your crochet. In this hands-on class, we’ll dive into the magic of yarn selection and how different fibers, textures, and materials affect your stitches, structure, and final look. We’ll explore:
The properties of natural vs. synthetic vs. blended fibers
How texture, ply, and thickness affect drape and stitch definition
The role of sheen, halo, and weight in design
Combining unexpected yarns (like thread + mohair, raffia + cotton)
Using yarn choice to express mood, story, or aesthetic
Students will work through a guided swatch experiment using a mix of yarns to feel the differences in real time. We'll also discuss practical design considerations—like how to swatch for drape, adjust tension, and plan fiber-conscious garments. By the end of class, you’ll better understand how to choose yarn as a creative partner, not just a supply—and you’ll walk away with a swatch sampler of fiber combinations that tell their own story.
