Kaffe Fassett’s impact on the world of knitting is unparalleled. For his niece, award-winning California artist Erin Lee Gafill, Kaffe was also her earliest artistic inspiration, mentor, and occasional babysitter.
In the 1970’s Kaffe would return to their family home in Big Sur from his world travels and share slideshows of his colorful adventures. When Erin was a young mother, she traveled to London to experience Kaffe’s creative world. As Erin’s life as an artist developed, they would meet in one of their studios to paint side by side.
While Kaffe led Erin into the world of multi-color knitting, needlepoint, and patchwork quilting, Erin’s painting practice inspired Kaffe to return to the easel.
This presentation will feature over one hundred slides of the two artists’ inspirations and outcomes including paintings, textiles, and working processes.
Their paintings and textiles were featured in a coffee table book, Color Duets - Kaffe Fassett | Erin Lee Gafill, as well as in a museum exhibition by the same name, the first post-pandemic exhibition of 2021 at the Monterey Museum of Art..
Erin will be delighted to sign a copy of the book for you after the Q&A.
