Led by Vincent Williams of Visuvio's Crafts, students will learn the tools, techniques, and mechanics of mending holes, thinned fabric, and other damage in your knit projects, including reading your knitting, identifying common types of damage, patching a hole with duplicate stitches (Swiss darning), comparing different types of mending/darning solutions, and when (or when not to) employ these techniques. Together, students will fix multiple hole situations on the Can You Mend It? Square by Vincent Williams and walk away with the knowledge of how to mend damage with more ease and confidence!

Technique Requirements: knit/purl, cast on/bind off

Completely knit, then bind off the swatch as described in the handout. Gently wet block or steam block the swatch to relax the sts and eliminate any puckering in the reverse stockinette st (aka the pre-planned hole damage areas) on the RS. You are all set to begin class! Do not weave in the tails hanging on the side of Rows 13, 14, 15, and 16. Bring all of the tools listed to dive into how we can mend thinning fabric, cuts, holes, or other fabric damage. I look forward to you and your excitement, as we will begin class by cutting - yes, CUTTING multiple holes into our fabric!

• Worsted-weight yarn (wool yarn with a crisp, tight twist recommended - mohair and boucle textures may increase the challenge of learning) in two colors. I will be using the following yardages of Malabrigo Rios for the demo: 84 yds Main Color (MC) for swatch; 8 yds Contrast Color (CC) for swatch; 110 yds Main Color (MC) for mending
• At least 25 yds of Crochet 10 thread in a highly visible color (I will be using white for the demo). *NOTE - If you are unable to find Crochet 10 thread, it is acceptable to substitute unwaxed dental floss, lace-weight, or fingering-weight yarn/thread (plant fiber recommended) for the darning foundation structure.
• US 6 / 4mm 24" circular needle
• US 8 / 5mm 24” circular needle
• US H / 5mm crochet hook
• Sharp embroidery scissors (short blade for precise cutting)
• 4 - Locking (or split ring) stitch markers (optional)
• Blunt Tapestry needle
