Have you ever looked at a knitting pattern and imagined how it might look with a touch of colorwork? Adding motifs to an existing design can transform a simple project into something uniquely your own. With a little planning, colorwork can be incorporated into many patterns without rewriting the entire design.

In this workshop we will explore how colorwork motifs are structured and how they can be integrated into existing knitting patterns. Students will select from a collection of simple motifs and learn how to evaluate motif size, adjust stitch counts, and determine where motifs can be successfully placed within a project.

Working from their chosen motif, students will begin knitting a colorwork section while exploring how motifs can be added to common project types such as hats, cowls, and sweater yokes. Along the way we will discuss spacing, centering motifs, and adapting repeats so they fit naturally within a pattern.

By the end of class you will understand how to incorporate colorwork motifs into existing patterns and have the tools needed to begin customizing your own knitting projects.

Technique Requirements: knit/purl, cast on/bind off, working in the round, easy colorwork

A variety of worsted-weight yarns in several colors (partial balls are fine; smooth wool or wool blends with good contrast are recommended), knitting needles appropriate for the yarn selected, stitch markers, notebook, pencil, and the usual knitting notions.
