Every knitting project begins with a cast-on and ends with a bind-off, yet many knitters rely on only one or two familiar methods throughout their knitting adventures. The edges of your work play an important role in the finished fabric, influencing stretch, structure, and the overall look of a project.

In this workshop we will explore a variety of cast-on and bind-off techniques and discuss how each one behaves in different situations. Some edges provide elasticity for ribbing and garments, while others create firm, structured, or decorative finishes. Understanding these differences allows you to choose the most appropriate edge for the project at hand.

Students will practice five cast on techniques and then create a series of small swatches while working five different bind offs. By the end of class you will have a collection of samples to reference later, along with a deeper understanding of how thoughtful choices at the beginning and end of a project can elevate the finished result.

Technique Requirements: knit/purl, cast on/bind off, have knit a few accessories

Three colors of worsted-weight yarn (high contrast is recommended), knitting needles appropriate for the yarn selected, crochet hook similar in size to knitting needle (for provisional cast on), small amount of waste yarn, scissors, tapestry needle, notebook, pencil, and the usual knitting notions.
