Class Details:

Not every project becomes a sweater. Not every shawl gets worn. But every handmade piece carries a story.

In this creative, multidisciplinary workshop, Beth Gorishek shares ways to transform knitted fabrics into meaningful works of art. Whether you’re working with swatches, unfinished projects, inherited handknits, thrifted treasures, or garments that never quite found their place in your wardrobe, you’ll learn how to reimagine them as beautiful displays for your home.

We’ll talk about why we hold onto certain projects, the memories that become attached to the things we make, and what happens when a handmade piece no longer serves its original purpose. Sometimes a project stops being something we wear and becomes something we want to remember.

Students will learn practical framing techniques, finishing methods, and display options while creating a plan for turning their own knitted pieces into artwork.

Part crafting workshop and part conversation about the stories we knit into our work, this class is all about finding new ways to celebrate the things we’ve made.

No knitting experience is required! This class is open to everyone, whether you’re an experienced knitter, new to the craft, or simply interested in finding a creative new use for a knitted piece. You do not need to have made the piece yourself. Gifted, inherited, thrifted, or unfinished knits are all welcome.

Homework:

Choose one pre-knitted piece that you’re comfortable transforming into wall art. This could be a swatch, shawl, scarf, small blanket, sweater, or unfinished project. A tip from Beth: Take a look in your UFO basket! This is a great opportunity to use something you’re unlikely to finish or wear, but aren’t quite ready to part with.

Select an embroidery hoop slightly smaller than the area of knitted fabric you’d like to feature, leaving enough fabric around the edges to secure it.
Don’t cut or alter your piece ahead of time. Bring it as-is and we’ll do the transforming together in class.
If your piece has a special story, think about what you might want to preserve or highlight in your finished art.

Supplies to Bring:

• One pre-knitted piece to transform
• An appropriately sized embroidery hoop
• Sharp scissors suitable for cutting yarn
• Tapestry needle
• Measuring tape or ruler
• Notebook or journal and pen/pencil

Fabric glue and applicators will be provided for use during class.

Reminder: Please print any handout(s) prior to class and bring it with you.
